There is a calming magic to Cornwall in the winter. It’s quiet, peaceful and shimmers beautifully in the crisp mornings. That low, golden, evening light makes the landscape positively glow, whilst the winter winds blow those inner cobwebs away. Remember there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing! Our cosy Cornish cottages make the perfect winter escape. Return from a cliff-top walk to comfy beds dressed with crisp White Company bed linen and solid stone walls that feel like a hug as the wood fires blaze. Winter in Cornwall can be stunningly beautiful.
If you do venture out from your lovely home from home then there are some great opportunities to spot the wildlife that we humans share the Lizard Peninsula with. Along our breathtaking coast rock pooling is brilliant fun no matter the season. Armed with wellies and a fishing net the curious can find whole kingdoms contained in secluded pools. The Moon Jellyfish breeds this time of year so you can spot clusters floating around. It is a stinger but not enough to penetrate human skin.
When it comes to birds, Cornwall is a winter haven. You may see the Redwing or Fieldfare, these Thrushes come all the way from Scandinavia and are fond of shrubs and the seasonal red berries. The famous Cornish Chough, now thriving after a 30 year absence, can be seen year round in Cornwall. In winter look for a ‘chattering', a group of mixed age birds. Our flat heathland landscape also attracts the likes of the Buzzard, Hen Harrier and majestic Owls.
You may even see some butterflies still fluttering around, the Red Admiral used to leave our shores come winter, but more recently seems happy to stay.
Our woods may look sleepy this time of year, but they are far from it. Woodpeckers, Nuthatches and Treecreepers will be seeking out food on the older trees. While the canny may see Dormice, Badgers, Otters, Squirrels, Foxes and Moles. So you see Cornwall really isn’t that quiet in winter at all!
